Kaplan took that moment to drop the detail about the lofty new player count that includes more than 40 million active players.
Blizzard released a new developer update for the Overwatch Anniversary on Tuesday.
Blizzard's successful online hero shooter Overwatch is having its two-year anniversary later this month, and fans are expecting something special, but before that, the development team has something else to share.
"Petra is lovely", Kaplan said during Wednesday's Developer Update video.
Jeff talks briefly about the new deathmatch map Petra which comes with a mega-health pack in the center of the map and it has a lot of "diversity". Don't miss out if you do not own the game yet! "We think you'll find that very fun".
This new Anniversary event is not just about the old modes though, as the game's Free-For-All Deathmatch mode will be getting a short competitive season. To help celebrate this and the anniversary, players can log in during the Overwatch Anniversary event and receive a free Legendary Anniversary Loot Box.
Kaplan also added that the Overwatch community now boasts 40 million players.
Regarding the deathmatch competitive season, Kaplan said that the Chateau map and Petra map will be the maps that can be played on for the mini competitive season.
Past brawls and cosmetics are back for Overwatch Anniversary 2018.
Eight legendary Anniversary skins will be released with the event, and Kaplan hinted that a certain hero will be coming to the event in formal wear. Logging on during the event for the first time will also get you one Legendary lootbox which means you're guaranteed at least one legendary item (please let it be that awesome 1980s Zarya skin that I missed out on previous year!).
