Indonesian authorities said today they shot and killed three "alleged terrorists" who staged an attack on a police headquarters that left one officer dead and several wounded, the local police chief said.
The latest assault in Pekanbaru on the island of Sumatra saw a group ram a minivan into a gate at the station and then attack officers with samurai swords, according to the country's national police.
"Four of them got out of the auto and tried to fight a group of police with samurai swords", Nandan, who uses only one name, said in a live interview with local television station TV One.
TV footage showed one man lying on the ground with a long sword next to his body.
One of the dead men had a suspected bomb strapped to his body, the report said. All three incidents involved the children of the three families, who knew each other and studied the Quran together, police said Tuesday.

One local journalist at the scene sustained minor injuries in the attack, police said.
The string of attacks comes as Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, welcomes the first day of Ramadan.
The police said they are hunting for the militants escaping the compound.
The latest attack happens after a series of incidents in East Java - Surabaya Police headquarters bombing on Monday, three Surabaya church bombings on Sunday morning and an accidentally blast inside a low-priced apartment in Sidoarjo on Sunday night.
