The team has jumped out to an early 2-0 series lead over the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Finals and will return home to Washington tonight at 8:00 p.m. for Game Three.
Stamkos ripped a power-play goal at 13:53 of the first period, on an assist from Victor Hedman. Backstrom had five points (one goal, four assists) in five games in the second round before he was injured.
It was especially true in the third period, when the Capitals took three penalties while trying to claw back into a game they trailed 3-1.
Stamkos stepped up his game with a 60% CF%, Vasilevskiy was solid, and the Lightning checked enough of the boxes elsewhere to get themselves back into the series, defeating the Capitals 4-2 in Game 3.
The Caps are 7-1 on the road in the playoffs and 3-4 at Capital One Arena. Brayden Point of the Lightning deflated those fans 5 minutes, 32 seconds later with his sixth goal of the playoffs.
The goal put the Lightning at 4/8 on the power play in this series.
But the key to the Game 3 victory was Tampa Bay's refusal to squander that effort from their stars, both offensively and defensively. "We talked about this, you've got to make them chase the game".
Did the Lightning feel they owed their goalie one, after hanging him out to dry for 10 goals in the first two games? He's always there, he's always there for us and tonight we did a good job in front of him. "Not good enough for power play, but we will be better for sure".
"If there is one thing I can sit here and say about these two games, it's we just played tentative and a little bit slow", Lightning coach Jon Cooper told NHL.com.
Washington's defensive play has limited the Lightning to one even-strength goal in the first two games, and the Capitals have succeeded in generating odd-man rushes when they have the puck.
Moreover, with the power-play goal - the 10th of his postseason career - Stamkos passed Martin St. Louis to become Tampa Bay's all-time leading playoff power-play scorer, at 25 points, per Bryan Burns.
