Houston-area media citing unnamed law enforcement officials are reporting that there are fatalities following a shooting at a local high school Friday morning. This is the third school shooting in the past seven days, and the 22nd since the beginning of the year in the United States. The student said she fled - and that she saw a student who had been wounded in the leg.
Patients from the school were taken to a hospital in Galveston, and medical helicopters have been spotted at the school, CNN reported. He did not say how many or give details about the injuries.
It was not immediately clear if anyone was injured, but video from Sky2 showed a white sheet draped over something in front of a door to the school.
The Santa Fe school district announced that the situation is active but "contained" and that students are being taken to the Santa Fe Independent School District Alamo Gym where parents can reunite with their children.
"It was just a normal class day and we were just sitting there doing our work in first period, then all of a sudden, it was a fire drill", student Angelica Martinez said to CNN. But not even five minutes later, we all start hearing gunshots, and everybody starts running.
"I didn't see anybody shooting, but like (the gunshots) were kind of spaced", she said, adding she heard about four shots. She didn't specify if that was before or after the gunfire she described in the art class.
"Law enforcement will continue to secure the building and initiate all emergency management protocols to release and move students to another location".
Sophomore Leila Butler told the local ABC affiliate that fire alarms went off at about 7:45 a.m. local time and students left their classrooms.
"I was in the history hallway, and as soon as we heard the alarms, everybody just started leaving following the same procedure as ... So, like, the teachers are telling us to stay put but we are all just running away". The school district just issued the following statement: "This morning an incident occurred at the high school involving an active shooter".
