Thirty six years before she took her own life in their Manhattan apartment, Kate Spade's husband Andy mourned the suicide of his stepfather, it has been revealed.
The iconic designer was found dead Tuesday at her apartment on Park Avenue in NY at age 55.
"We were in touch with her the night before and she sounded happy", he said.
In reference to claims Kate had been troubled by recent issues in their relationship, and was "drinking" as a result, Andy explains the couple had been living separately for 10 months but within blocks of one another. Saffo said, adding, "One of the last things she said to me was, 'Reta, I know you hate funerals and don't attend them, but for me would you PLEASE come to MINE, at least".
"I, personally - I don't know about Andy - took off a good nine years raising my daughter, and absolutely adored every moment of it", she said. "We loved each other very much and simply needed a break", he said in his statement. The designer left a suicide note addressed to her 13-year-old daughter, telling her it was not her fault.

Andy Spade, the husband of designer Kate Spade, is speaking publicly about his wife's death at age 55.
The New York Police Department confirmed Spade's death under her birth name, Katherine Noel Brosnahan, on Tuesday.
"Kate was the most attractive woman in the world. This was someone that really valued her private life and I don't think Kate could live in the cruel world that we live in today".
"Kate suffered from depression and anxiety for many years".
He also said he had yet to see the note which has been "heartlessly shared with media" and denied his wife was abusing alcohol or other substances.
Tapestry Inc, the handbag company formerly known as Coach, eventually bought the Kate Spade brand in May 2017 to tap millennials, who are drawn to the company's quirky satchels and colourful tote bags.
Andy describes his wife as "the most lovely woman in the world", and his best friend of 35 years.
