In a message, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres urged all people to reject single-use plastic items, and warned that growing levels of plastic waste were becoming unmanageable, saying "every year, more than eight million tons end up in the oceans".
"Implement the Extended Producer Responsibility programme where manufacturers must be held to account for the entire lifecycle of their consumer products", the statement read.
Iain Gulland, Chief Executive, Zero Waste Scotland, added: "There's an enormous opportunity to turn single-use plastic bottles into a valuable resource if placed in the correct recycling bins".
Environment Minister Sergio Costa has meanwhile pledged to make his ministry "plastic-free" and plans to launch an "economic and cultural strategy to begin reducing plastic production and excessive packaging".
