In Oregon, two people on average lose their lives to suicide each day, making self-harm one of the leading causes of death.
As the country mourns the reported suicides of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain and discusses methods of prevention, the CDC's Vital Signs report shows that suicide rates have been rising in almost every state from 1999 to 2016.
Across the board in the USA, suicide rates were up 25.4 percent in that 17-year period.
The CDC says that more than 45,000 Americans age 10 and older dying by suicide in 2016.
In Baltimore, about 53 people die from suicide annually, and 82 percent of those deaths occur among men, according to 2014 data from the Baltimore City Health Department. But local mental health advocates said they are also seeing younger people struggling with suicidal impulses.
Advocates fighting to decrease those numbers say it's crucial we understand suicide is more than a mental health issue - it's a public health issue.

"Any type of graphic reporting about suicide, even things that are spread on social media, can really influence people who are now struggling with thoughts about ending their life", Jennifer Sikora told KDKA's Jon Delano on Friday.
Suicide rates are higher in rural areas, with the gap between rates in urban and rural areas widening, with 2007 seeing the gap begin to widen more quickly, the CDC reports. The series includes content warnings before the start of some episodes, as well as directives to contact suicide hotlines by the series' actors. The CDC lists its own recommendations for policies, programs and prevention practices here, including strengthening economic supports to ease financial strains; creating protective environments where people live and work; and promoting connectedness in communities.
At least one mother has blamed the series for her own daughter's suicide attempt. It's a hidden problem for many people.
The rate was the highest in Montana with an increase of 38 percent between 1999 and 2016.
The report says entire communities should be involved in preventing suicide.
Oregon's rate climbed to 17.8 suicide deaths per 100,000.
