Now the Los Angeles Police Department is saying it believes the 33-year-old committed a crime spree in various L.A. neighborhoods before being caught after the 7-Eleven incident, and is being charged with attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of brandishing a knife, and one count of battery.
In the most serious incidents, Redmond James O'Neal allegedly stabbed a man in the side near the Venice Beach boardwalk on May 4, then later that night stabbed another man, inflicting serious wounds and cuts to his face, neck and upper body, police said. The police also charged him with possession of drugs including the possession of a smoking device. The police arrested Redmond on the 8th of May after he was identified as a suspect in an armed robbery at a 7-Eleven.
He is being held in a Los Angeles jail.
All five alleged attacks involve a suspect whose description, at least partially, matches that of O'Neal, including being white, with red hair and distinct tattoos. He punched the victim before trying to stab him with a broken bottle, leaving the man with minor injuries to his face.
O'Neal allegedly got into a fight at a coffee shop and threatened staff with a knife on May 5, police said.
According to a press release from the LAPD, detectives from the Pacific Area presented their findings to the District Attorney's Office on Friday, June 8. As it was previously reported, O'Neal pleaded guilty on the 11th of May to robbing a store in Santa Monica.
Authorities have not released a motive and said the crimes seem random, but it may have started as an argument between unknown people.
It was the latest addition to a criminal file for O'Neal, who has a troubled history of encounters with law enforcement, as well as a publicized battle with drug addiction.
O'Neal is the only son of actors Ryan O'Neal, a star of TV and film, and Farrah Fawcett, the '70s icon and model whose acting career skyrocketed after her role in "Charlie's Angels". Redmond was her only child. In 2016, he was released after nearly two years in prison.
