There was speculation throughout the day over whether Kim Jong Un had taken his private jet- an Ilyushin IL-62M - from Pyongyang, but official photos released by the Singaporean Ministry of Communications and Information showing Kim meeting Balakrishnan on the tarmac appear to reveal that he flew to Singapore aboard an Air China Boeing 747.
"Wide-ranging and profound views on the issue of establishing new DPRK-US relations, the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean peninsula, the issue of realising the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern, as required by the changed era, will be exchanged at the DPRK-US summit talks", the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported in English.
"If that happens, I say give Trump that Nobel [Peace] Prize we all know he wants".
The tone heading into the meetings is positive, but the risk that things will go awry is also very real.
Pompeo has maintained that complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization is the "only outcome" acceptable to the USA and that the Trump administration hopes ultimately to reach an agreement with the North Koreans that it can submit to Congress "so that when administrations do change, as they inevitably do, and this one will ... that Chairman Kim will have comfort that American policy will continue down the same path".
As Trump himself has acknowledged, making an agreement with Kim would be easy.
"We've got a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow", Trump said at a luncheon with the Singapore prime minister on Monday. "We appreciate your hospitality and professionalism and friendship".
"Substantive and detailed meetings in #Singapore today as Ambassador Kim meets with #DPRK", Pompeo wrote in a Twitter post in which he included a photograph of the meeting between US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim, North Korean Foreign Ministry senior official Choi Sun Hee and other delegates from both countries.
Pompeo criticized a report in The New York Times that questioned whether the US has the technical expertise needed on the ground in Singapore.
Singapore knows how to handle events like this, however historic they may be.
Trump landed at Paya Lebar Airbase on board Air Force One after cutting short his time at the G7 summit in Canada. Trump and Kim come from very different backgrounds and ideologies, and at 71, Trump is about twice as old as the North Korean leader.
The Trump-Kim summit, which will be held at the Capella Hotel on Tuesday morning, will mark the first time a North Korean leader has met with a sitting U.S. president.
Kim has shown surprising diplomatic skills in his meetings with overseas leaders this year.
The running bodyguards of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un - which made an appearance for the first time during the inter-Korean summit in April this year - are now back in action, this time in Singapore.
Lobster bisque, beef tenderloin and ice cream were on the lunch menu, and there was also an early birthday cake for Trump, who turns 72 on Thursday. The North Korean autocrat's every move will be followed by 3,000 journalists up until he shakes hands with Trump.
During his meeting, Trump was presented with an early birthday cake.
