Polestar Engineered debuts on the forthcoming new S60 saloon. All Volvo models will be available with electrified powertrains by 2019, and the new S60 will be available with the T8 supercharged, turbocharged, plug-in electric 2.0-liter I-4. Polestar Engineered debuts on the 2019 S60 and is exclusively available on the 8 Twin Engine model, positioned above the R Design versions.
Polestar has fine-tuned the engine control unit to raise the T8 plug-in hybrid drivetrain's outputs from 298kW and 640Nm to 309kW and 670Nm. Like that vehicle, these high-spec "60 series" models will incorporate Polestar's new aesthetic trademarks, such as gold-painted brake calipers, Brembo monoblock units in this case. Polestar emblems, black chrome exhaust pipes and golden seat belts also identify Volvo models equipped with Polestar Engineered.
When it comes to Polestar, we've largely been focused on the company's ambitious plans to launch a trio of electrified cars in the coming years.
Recall, Polestar is now a standalone brand so will no longer be building dedicated performance offerings for Volvo like the current S60 and V60 Polestar models.
The news comes one week before the brand introduces its "Made in USA" premium sports sedan, S60, at the inauguration of its first United States manufacturing plant in Charleston, South Carolina.
Volvo says the Polestar Engineered ECU increases fuel efficiency while adding torque and power, and is emissions-neutral.
Polestar may now be a manufacturer in its own right, but it's teaming up with Volvo for a new range of high-performance parts. The S60's strut bar and adjustable shock absorber design are shared with the Polestar 1 performance PHEV. The Brembo six-piston callipers are one-piece cast for better rigidity and they clamp down on pads with increased heat tolerance to reduce fade.
That Twin Engine T8 powertrain, remember, is a hybrid electric. "All components have been fine-tuned to work together, delivering a responsive and exciting drivers' auto".
