President Donald Trump speaks to reporters at the White House, Friday, June 15, 2018, in Washington.
At the end of May, Yuri Ushakov, an aide of the Russian President said that the opportunity of organizing a meeting between Putin and Trump in the coming months, before the summit of G20 in November, has not been discussed yet.
Trump blamed his predecessor Barack Obama for the Russian annexation of Crimea, claiming it was Obama's "fault" because "Putin didn't respect President Obama". Russian Federation was suspended from the G-7 in 2014 after it annexed Crimea, in a move that was widely condemned as a violation of global norms. "One more time, President Obama gave away Crimea". The act was deemed so aggressive that other leaders kicked Russian Federation out of the group and canceled an upcoming summit in Russian Federation.
"Russia should be in this meeting", Trump told reporters before flying to the G7 in Canada.
"President Obama lost Crimea".
Trump had been increasingly critical of the USA allies as he went into the summit, with French President Emmanuel Macron stating the meeting may turn into G6 summit if Trump keeps rebuking the agreed upon policies.
During a G7 dinner on June 8, Trump also called Ukraine one of the most corrupted countries in the world and questioned why the Group of Seven leaders support it, Buzzfeed reported, citing two diplomatic sources.
Meanwhile, the Russian president confirmed on June 10 that he was ready to meet with Trump as soon as the U.S. was also ready for that. Kurtz, the report said, agreed to approach Trump about the meeting. North Atlantic Treaty Organisation officially suspended all cooperation with Russian Federation, which is not a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member, nearly immediately after their annexation of Crimea in 2014.
