"You watch, we do the work", summed up the post, which is attributed to Cameron Johnson, Director of Product Innovation.
The company said the aim of the new downloading features is to remove the hassle of navigating through files and deleting download episodes manually.
The streaming service launched the Download feature in 2016, making it possible for customers to watch shows and movies on the go. When the Netflix app detects that an episode of a TV show has been watched, it will download a new episode and delete the old episode only when the device is connected to a Wi-Fi connection. Smart Downloads will be particularly useful for users in developing markets, where many smartphones are entry-level devices with less storage available. But as competitors like Amazon Prime Video began offering downloads, and as Netflix itself expanded internationally to markets where mobile connectivity wasn't as reliable as in the US, Netflix relented. Called "smart downloads", the tool is meant to help users manage the Netflix content on their devices. There are more details on how to use the Smart Downloads feature and you can read all about it here.
Smart Downloads can be turned off straight from the app's settings if you like.
Smart Downloads deletes Season 1, Episode 1, and automatically downloads Season 1, Episode 4. Users can have multiple episodes of a TV series downloaded at once, but they typically don't download entire seasons.
It's limited to episodic TV series, not movies, standup specials or other kinds of programming.
