Twelve Russian intelligence officers were indicted on charges they hacked into Democratic email accounts during the 2016 US presidential election and released stolen information in the months before Americans headed to the polls, the Justice Department said Friday.
"What they're doing is spending - at a much faster clip they're going up to the 2 percent level", Trump said. "We're supposed to protect you against Russian Federation but they're paying billions of dollars to Russian Federation and I think that's very inappropriate".
Trump said he did not think Russian Federation would have invaded Crimea if he had been in the White House at the time.
In an antagonistic opening salvo during a breakfast Wednesday morning with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders, Trump said that Germany was "totally controlled" and "captive to Russia", due to a pipeline project that would supply the European country with Russian gas. "Donald Trump must immediately cancel his planned summit with Vladimir Putin until Russian Federation demonstrates its willingness to come back into the community of nations that respect the rule of law, legal norms and democratic institutions".
The summit is not about "bargaining" between the two leaders, he said, but to "compare their positions and clarify to confirm or dispel the fears of each on a number of topics".
"There should be no one-on-one meeting between this President and Mr. Putin", Warner told reporters Friday.
House Judiciary Committee ranking member Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., told reporters following the announcement of the new charges that he thought Trump should keep the meeting and demand that Russia extradite the 12 Russians named in the indictment.
"This indictment makes clear just how vast this operation was - including Russian intelligence officers' intrusion into the website of a state election board and theft of information related to approximately 500,000 voters", Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair Tom Perez tweeted. All 12 of the defendants are said to be members of the GRU, Russia's military intelligence agency.
Within minutes of the indictment, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., urged Trump to call off the Putin meeting.
They are expected to discuss the expulsion of United States diplomats from 2016 over issues including the allegations of election meddling.
Still, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said the internet "allows foreign adversaries to attack Americans in new and unexpected ways. I think if I were president then, he would not have taken over Crimea", he said.
Republican Senator John McCain said the summit should be called off if Trump is not ready to warn Putin there is a "serious price to pay for his ongoing aggression towards the United States and democracies around the world". Pure stupidity. But it makes it very hard to do something with Russian Federation. In a reference to Germany's plan to import natural gas from Russian Federation by constructing a seabed pipeline, Trump bluntly called the country a "captive" of Russian Federation.
"It's a horrific thing being done where you're feeding billions and billions of dollars from Germany... into the coffers of Russian Federation when we're trying to do something so that we have peace in the world".
