The company said the development of the new product will generate new opportunities in the mobile and automotive industries, adding the 10nm-class LPDDR5 DRAM will be available in two bandwidths for different needs from such segments.
Samsung has developed a new RAM module for use in future smartphones, and it's created to help make phones with 5G technology and more powerful artificial intelligence a reality.
Samsung has Announces its latest 8Gb LPDDR5 DRAM for 5G and AI-Powered Mobile Devices. The previous generation LPDDR4x used a similar operating voltage of 1.1V, but only provided a bandwidth of 4,260Mb/s. Decreasing the distance between components on a chip saves power, while also speeding up performance. The company was able to achieve this performance advancement by doubling the number of memory subdivisions within a DRAM cell from eight to 16. Thanks to these low-power features, the 8Gb LPDDR5 DRAM is expected to offer power-consumption reductions of up to 30 percent, maximizing mobile device performance and extending the battery life of smartphones. Additionally, the chip has been configured to avoid overwriting cells with "0" values, thereby avoiding wasting electricity on reiterating an existing value.
In order to boost power savings, the LPDDR5 DRAM has been developed in a way that it can reduce its voltage in compatibility with the operating speed of the processor. Samsung mentions that the new chips support an improved deep sleep state that consumes half the power required by the current LPDDR4 memory modules.
Samsung said that its prototype 8 GB (not 8 Gbit) LPDDR5 DRAM package made up of eight such 8 Gbit (not GB) chips has been tested and it didn't catch fire. It is possible they're waiting on the specification to be finalized.
The RAM will be used to power Samsung's 5G phones, and new artificial intelligence and machine learning apps and services.
