In the midst of Ohio State's investigation into whether or not head coach Urban Meyer was aware of alleged domestic violence by former assistant Zach Smith, fans of the Buckeyes have gathered to host a rally for Meyer, who is now on paid administrative leave.
Zach Smith, the Ohio State receivers coach who was sacked last month after being charged with violating a protective order issued for his ex-wife, Courtney, was wide-receivers coach at Temple in 2011 under then-coach Steve Addazio. "We look forward to sharing the results of this investigation and any action the university may take". Mary Jo White, the former chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and head investigator on the team, has previously worked on National Football League cases, most recently the investigation into workplace misconduct by Panthers owner Jerry Richardson.
Smith was sacked on July 23 after reports emerged of multiple domestic abuse allegations involving Smith and his ex-wife Courtney. While Urban Meyer denied knowledge of the alleged abuse at Big Ten media days, he said in a statement last week he followed proper protocols. He said he discussed the 2015 allegations at the time with Meyer and athletic director Gene Smith. Fans have also started a petition to "save" Meyer that has around 25,000 signatures. Zach Smith, a grandson of late Buckeyes coach Earle Bruce, who was a mentor to Meyer, also asserted that he had never harmed her and that the head coach handled the allegations appropriately.
Smith was part of Meyer's staff at Florida from 2005-09 and at Ohio State from 2012-17.
