If Tiger Woods' Wednesday practice round was any indication, the atmosphere at this week's PGA Championship is going to be absolutely nuts.
He took an ice bath. And a lot of stretching.
But the Englishman dispelled any suggestion he would not be ready to go on Thursday.
He walked each nine at Bellerive Country Club, though, and he thinks that's good enough. That leaves him just two days to prepare for a course that he has not seen since practicing for the 2001 American Express Invitational that was canceled due to the September 11 terrorist attacks.
A return to matchplay - the format of the tournament until 1957 - would certainly fit the bill but in the TV age it simply won't happen.
It's been like that all year. Thomas is expected to be one of the top performers during this upcoming tournament.
Last week's outing at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational saw Spieth finish tied for 60th and added to a season of inconsistency. "To get to this point is a phenomenal achievement already".
"Tiger has been a pretty big influence for me", Thomas said.
"I've done well, I'm slowly getting back up the world rankings". So things are going to be different from day to day, and it's just about managing it.
"So a situation like The Open, where I was really patient the first few rounds, I kind of let it come to me".
"I have the time to look around a little more closely", he said.
Oosthuizen was runner-up at the PGA previous year and is one of a few players to have finished second at every major in his career.
Hot but not scorching conditions with high humidity are forecast on all four days with only an outside chance of rain and Thomas said he thought Johnson is probably the man to beat. Last week Rory was playing a driver and seven iron into the 16 hole that was playing at 648 yards... real yards, albeit all downhill. He learned a lot at the British Open, and he has the game to do it. He's building up all that.
Woods and McIlroy have won the same number of majors over the past four years - none. Of the top 31 players in the Official World Golf Ranking, only three (Jason Day, Hideki Matsuyama, Marc Leishman) are not from the USA or Europe.
McIlroy since then has played in the final group three times, including at the Masters. The Florida Fleetwood received a $154,000 payment that, it turns out, was the 12th-place money from the British Open that should have gone to the other Fleetwood.
"Since I've been playing well, and particularly since I've been playing well in the majors, I tend to look at them more".
The forecast is reasonable for the rest of the week, at least until Saturday, leaving players just one more day to study Bellerive, with its tree-lined fairways and large green complexes. "I didn't get up here pre-Open and (Monday) I took the day off".
Woods no longer has that luxury.
Woods has not played the PGA since 2015 at Whistling Straits, where he missed the cut.
Bevacqua said the organization decided a couple years ago its current headquarters in Palm Beach Gardens no longer fit the bill. Winning tournaments still could make a good year.
"I literally haven't set foot on this golf course since that week in 2001", Woods said.
"You have to make the most of everything, you have to see the positives and just move on and forget about it and that's what I've tried to do this year". So just coming back and being able to play at this level and compete. "When I go to a professional tennis tournament, a lot of times I hang out at the practice court, just watching the tennis players hit, to see how they go about preparing".
