Manafort, 69, faces tax evasion and bank fraud charges, as he is accused of hiding a "significant percentage" of income earned from his lobbyist work in Ukraine from the IRS.
Gates, who pleaded guilty and is cooperating with Mueller's prosecutors, spent less than 70 minutes on the witness stand on Wednesday.
In detailed testimony, Gates walked prosecutors through the step-by-step process on how he and Manafort doctored and backdated documents.
Laporta admitted on the witness stand last Friday that during a conference call in September 2015, she agreed, on Gates' urging, to alter a tax document for one of Manafort's businesses in order to disguise $900,000 in foreign income as a loan, according to the Associated Press, thus reducing Manafort's tax burden by almost half a million dollars.
Some lawyers following the trial also criticized Ellis for not reacting more strongly to defense lawyer Kevin Downing's attempt to ask the government's star witness Rick Gates on Wednesday whether he had told prosecutors about his four extramarital affairs.
The judge has subjected the prosecution to repeated tongue-lashings over the pace of their questioning, their massive amount of trial exhibits and even their facial expressions.
Downing then asked whether Gates's "secret life" spanned the four-year period from 2010 to 2014, when he was embezzling from Manafort.
"He always had control over the accounts", Gates said of Manafort, and the income was not reported to his bookkeepers, his accountants or the United States tax authorities.
As well as being a senior aide on Trump's election campaign, Gates served as the deputy chairman of the USA president's inaugural committee.
Gates, also a former Trump campaign aide, has claimed during three days of evidence that he both stole for and stole from Manafort, who denies 18 counts of bank and tax fraud and failing to disclose foreign bank accounts.
Prosecutor Greg Andres asked Gates on Wednesday whether Mueller's team had told him how to answer questions.
On Wednesday, Downing sought to counter earlier testimony that Manafort had encouraged Gates to deceive authorities by getting Gates to acknowledge that Manafort told him to be truthful about offshore shell companies and bank accounts during a 2014 interview with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
As he has repeatedly noted, President Donald Trump is not directly implicated in Paul Manafort's Virginia trial. Previously, Gates revealed to the court and to the Special Counsel's Office that he had stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars from Manafort out of the foreign accounts when he faked expense reports.
"Because I don't want to get into trouble for some facial expression", Mr. Andres said.
"Generally, when a person's testimony is corroborated by objective evidence - whether that be a recording, a document, or something else - it makes it hard to attack that by just attacking the witness's credibility", a former US attorney with experience prosecuting similar fraud cases said.
Gates said he and Manafort turned to a Cypriot lawyer, whom he referred to in court as "Dr K", who set up bank accounts and shell companies on Manafort's behalf and "handled everything".
She confirmed that she did not know who signed his name, only that she has to rely on documents provided by the financial institutions. He said there were 15 secret accounts.
According to testimony, he used the accounts to receive payments from Ukrainian oligarchs.
Funds "should be in your account today".
Magionos also walked jurors through charts breaking down the movement of Cyprus money to specific vendors and for use in a series of NY real estate transactions.
Before jurors are sent off to deliberate at the end of a case, the judge typically tells them not to read anything into either the judge's words or body language, attorney and law professor Seth Abramson said in an email.
On Thursday, they also asked Ellis to seal portions of a bench conversation that came during the testimony of Gates, Manafort's longtime deputy, because "substantive evidence" in an ongoing investigation was discussed. The jury had not yet returned to the courtroom.
