That's according to estimates released on Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control.
Although the use of prescription painkillers has declined nationwide, analysts say the presence of the deadly opioid fentanyl in the illicit drug supply is the primary cause for the continued surge in deaths.
The CDC estimates around 72,000 people fatally overdosed.
More than 40,000 people died last from opioid overdoses previous year, and almost 30,000 people died from overdoses of synthetic opioids, like fentanyl.
When describing deaths involving specific drugs, "a single death might be included in more than one category", Rossen and lead author Farida B. Ahmad, of the Division of Vital Statistics at the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics, noted in the report.
That represents a rise of 6.6 percent nationwide from 2016 and a death toll higher than any other cause of non-disease death in the USA, including HIV, homicides, or auto crashes.
The CDC cautions these figures are early estimates based on monthly death records processed by the agency.
The report, "Opioid-related Overdose Deaths in MA by Industry and Occupation, 2011-2015", was created by the DPH's Occupational Health Surveillance Program in collaboration with the Bureau of Substance Addiction Services, Injury Surveillance Program, and Office of Special Analytic Projects, and was funded by the CDC.
The lowest number of overdose deaths due to cocaine, 4,312 in 2010, rose to a preliminary count of 14,556 in 2017, a 3.5-fold increase, the report also said.
The CDC's data also showed that the overdose rate decreased in a number of states, including Vermont and MA, where overdose rates were among the highest in the nation.
The Trump administration has declared the opioid crisis a national public health emergency.
Deaths involving anti-anxiety medications Benzodiazepine mixed with opioids also increased.
"While the opioid epidemic is a major concern, it is worth mentioning there are non-opioids overdoses representing 32.1%" of the total overdose deaths for 2017, Ebied said. It's 100 times more potent than fentanyl and 10,000 times more potent than morphine.
