With these features, the lighter Maps Go version will become more useful for low-end Android phone users and Google claims to offer a good experience on slower 2G internet speeds as well.
The Mountain View-based company also says it's working to bring more Indian language content online with a new project called Navlekhā (derived from Sanskrit for "a new way to write"). Google also announced Bilingual Feed for users in India, along with a talking dictionary.
Navlekha now will be available with Hindi publications, and later will expand to other Indian languages as well. Google Station is partnering Andhra Pradesh State FiberNet Limited to cover over 12,000 villages, towns and cities in the state of Andhra Pradesh, potentially reaching 10 million people.
Google-owned UPI-based payment platform Google Tez is now Google Pay.
Pavel Naiya, a senior analyst with Counterpoint Research, also said that the company's efforts seemed concentrated on generating more Indic language content for training its data engines for Google Assistant, which would lead to more voice computing and help the company in understanding consumer behaviour.
This includes addition of Marathi language as the first of eight new Indian languages, as well as integration with local apps such as Airtel, Hello English and Where is my Train. Google Pay has partnered with Federal, ICICI, HDFC, and Kotak Mahindra to roll out the instant loan feature in the next few weeks.
The Google Go feature that will read text aloud will greatly assist people who have trouble reading or are not skilled in the original language of the web page.
