The 2019 Miss America pageant took place on Sunday (September 9) and a new woman was given the crown!
Win she won, Franklin said, "It took a lot of perseverance to get here, and I just want to thank my attractive family".
This year marked Miss America 2.0 as the former beauty pageant eliminated previous aspects of the show, including the swimsuit competition. The choice of wardrobe is now open, so everyone can express their own very individual style.
In a letter to past winners, published earlier this year, however, Mund wrote: "Our chair and CEO have systematically silenced me, reduced me, marginalized me and essentially erased me in my role as Miss America in subtle and not-so-subtle ways on a daily basis".
The 2017 titleholder Cara Mund, who stirred serious controversy in the pageant world after publicly accusing Miss America organization leadership of "silencing" and "bullying" her during her reign, got a standing ovation from the live audience as she took her final walk in a gorgeous emerald Sherri Hill gown. "My mom and my dad, who is a survivor of cancer".
Cara Mund, who was crowned a year ago while competing as Miss North Dakota, accused Miss America leadership of silencing and bullying her after she was crowned.
An opera singer, Franklin is a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and earned her master's degree in music composition from UNC School of the Arts.
And behind the scenes, a revolt was under way among most of the Miss America state organizations who demand that national chairwoman Gretchen Carlson and CEO Regina Hopper resign. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Franklin said that she wanted to promote diversity, especially within the arts.
A total of 51 women representing every state and the District of Columbia competed for the crown. Judges included Laila Ali, Bobby Bones, Randy Jackson, Jessie James Decker, Soledad O'Brien, Alli Webb and Carnie Wilson.
The fourth runner up was Miss Massachusetts Gabriela Taveras; third runner up was Miss Florida Taylor Tyson; second runner up was Miss Louisiana Holli' Conway, and the first runner up was Miss Connecticut Bridget Oei.
