Adware Medic was a direct copy of an app developed by Malwarebytes. The apps also gathered information on other apps installed on the system, according to 9to5Mac.
It claims it prevents "malware and malicious files from infecting your Mac" and claims to be one of the best apps to do so.
Thanks to the permissions it has, namely the possibility of accessing browsers, it is consulting and collecting users browsing history.
Nevertheless, Trend Micro has made a decision to remove the browser history collecting capability from all the company's Mac apps. 9to5Mac confirmed this with its testing of the Dr. Unarchiver app.
Antivirus vendor Trend Micro has apologized after its Mac apps were found collecting browser histories from people's computers.
Another thing these apps have in common is a connection with Trend Micro and a Chinese developer.
"Let's face it, your browsing history provides a glimpse into nearly every aspect of your life", Patrick Wardle, a former NSA hacker and chief research officer at cybersecurity firm, Digita Security said. Already, there are calls for Apple to consider hiring an independent board to oversee app store approvals and make this area more transparent.
"Trend Micro is aware of a recent scrutiny of some of our consumer applications, including our Dr". It goes on to try to suggest that this was nothing to worry about as it "was a one-time data collection, done for security purposes", offering the justification that it was "to analyze whether a user had recently encountered adware or other threats, and thus to improve the product and service".
Every app in this group-or should it be a "practice" since they're all doctors?-appeared to steal data in the same way. Cleaner, and others distributed by developer "Trend Micro, Inc." collect and upload the user's browser history from Safari, Google Chrome, and Firefox onto their servers via access to the macOS home directory. A free app from the App Store may seem perfectly innocent and harmless, but if you have to give that app access to any of your data as part of its expected functionality, you can't know how it will use that data. A representative of the company told BleepingComputer that the company statement would be updated continuously.
