Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos seems to be Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant's arch-nemesis, so it only makes sense that she would have something to say about the entrepreneur's $2 billion charitable fund toward homelessness and education.
The second will launch a network of "high-quality, full-scholarship" preschools in low-income communities, which a Day One Fund organization will directly operate.
"We'll use the same set of principles that have driven Amazon", wrote Bezos. Citing the Amazon mantra of customer obsession, Bezos said in a tweet here: "The child will be the customer". "The child will be the customer". At the time, he said that he was interested in funding projects to help people at the intersection of urgent need and lasting impact.
An Amazon spokesperson confirmed that the money will all come from Bezos, though there are few details about how the fund will operate.
The fight soured many more locals on Amazon and Bezos, and also overshadowed the growing portfolio of philanthropy they had done in the city. Outside of that, Bezos and his family's known donations have included gifts to Princeton University and Seattle's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
While communities across the country earned looks from Amazon, the D.C. region has always been viewed as a favorite to earn Amazon's new headquarters after the company listed Northern Virginia, Maryland and D.C. among its 20 finalists in January. In August 2010, 40 of America's wealthiest individuals and couples joined together in a "Giving Pledge", which was a commitment spearheaded by Bill and Melinda Gates and Buffet for these wealthy individuals to give away more than half of their wealth.
Last week, Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba and China's richest man, announced plans to step down and focus more on a new foundation that he said was inspired in part by Gates' example.
Bezos's personal wealth has soared with the value of Amazon, whose stock price has doubled over the past year with its expansion into new sectors and geographies. Amazon's digital assistant Alexa has helped drive its hardware sales and is used on smart devices ranging from cars to refrigerators.
