A British caver who helped in the dramatic rescue of 12 boys trapped in Thailand earlier this year sued Tesla founder Elon Musk on Monday, September 17, for calling him a "pedo guy" and a "child rapist".
The lawsuit, which was filed in Los Angeles federal court, asks for more than $750,000 in damages and a court order stopping Musk from making further allegations.
Unsworth is seeking more than $75,000, the statutory minimum, to compensate for the "worldwide damage" he suffered following Musk's attacks, uttered by Musk in July to his more than 22 million Twitter followers.
Three days later, Musk defended his mini-submarine proposal, but said he had "spoken in anger" toward Unsworth, and that "his actions against me do not justify my actions against him", and that "the fault is mine and mine alone".
In a series of tweets on 15 July, Mr Musk, who personally delivered the submarine to the cave, wrote that he never saw Mr Unsworth and challenged him to show a video of the final rescue.
Tesla did not immediately respond to FOX Business' request for comment on the lawsuit against Musk.
Stephens did not say when Mr Unsworth planned to file a claim in the British courts.
An email to Buzzfeed reporter Ryan Mac included the claim the Briton was a "child rapist", imploring the reporter to "find out what's actually going on" and suggesting the diver took no part in the cave rescue.
'Mr Unsworth is not a paedophile.
But on 28 August, Mr Musk tweeted again, writing: 'You don't think it's odd he hasn't sued me?
Mr Unsworth, who is a renowned diver and knew the cave system well, holds Mr Musk "legally accountable for his wrongdoing and to vindicate his reputation", they add.
Mr Unsworth's lawyers said these accusations are false and have been proved so by comments from other rescuers in the media. Chiang Rai is renowned for child sex-trafficking.
The row between the pair started as a result of Mr Unsworth criticising Mr Musk's decision to bring a tube to the cave system which the Space X designer said could carry the boys out of the caves.
