In exchange for Gordon, the Browns received a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
In the six years since Gordon was taken in the second round of the supplemental draft he has played in just 41 games.
After initially saying they would cut Gordon on Monday, the Browns chose to take advantage of the market and find a trade partner. The Eagles can use all the wide receiver help they can get, and it'll be low risk because of Gordon's favorable contract. But in going from hapless Cleveland to the NFL's model franchise in New England, a better opportunity has never been in front of him. Gordon can undoubtedly be an asset to an organization on the field, but his sudden release from Cleveland could make teams skeptical. Also Gordon's troubled past and health issues are a legitimate concern.
Gordon caught Cleveland's game-tying touchdown against the Steelers in Week 1, when he logged 70 snaps just weeks after returning to the Browns from his training-camp reprieve to seek treatment for his substance addiction.
New England is thin at wide receiver and will be without Julian Edelman for two more games as he finishes serving his four-game suspension for violating the league's performance enhancing drug policy. At least five other people were present as Gordon went through football-related drills, and after about 90 minutes of shooting Friday, the source said Gordon pulled up limping while running a 40-yard dash and grabbed at his hamstring.
"I think it's obviously known that he's a freakish athlete", Patriots receiver Phillip Dorsett said moments after the trade became official.
As the Patriots have filtered a variety of wide receivers in and out of Foxborough this season, Brady has been open about the process of developing trust with his receiving corps. But no reaction will draw more attention than the one from Gordon himself.
