At the most prestigious awards show in U.S. television, Welsh star Matthew Rhys won the lead actor in a drama series prize for his role in FX's The Americans, while English actress Claire Foy scooped the equivalent award in the female category for her portrayal of the Queen in Netflix's The Crown. It's her third Emmy win in four years. The other big story of the gala, television's answer to the Oscars, was the huge success of eight Emmys overall for Best Comedy Series The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, Amazon's story of a 1950s housewife-turned-stand-up comic. "It was definitely hard to say goodbye to because it wasn't just saying goodbye to the show, I was saying goodbye to a life over there".
Thandie Newton won outstanding supporting actress in a drama series for Westworld.
In another win for Netflix, Regina King received the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie award for Seven Seconds.
HBO's "Game of Thrones" was named best drama series, beating last year's champion "The Handmaid's Tale".
The 70th Emmy Awards will be telecast live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Monday, September 17 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC. "Tonight, I got to clear the table", an ebullient Winkler said, with an equally delighted auditorium audience rising to give him a standing ovation. "Writing for these actors behind us is the honor of a lifetime", said series co-creator David Benioff. "Because I want to call you my wife", he added to cheers, applause and a few teary-eyed actors in the audience.
Emmy awards sit before being presented to recipients. The show was first nominated in 1976, the same year that it took home its first award in the category. The long-running NBC sketch show, already the top Emmy victor ever with 71, won again for best variety sketch series.
