An arrest has been made following the stabbing death of a 35-year-old South Florida woman who was attacked while jogging in Washington D.C., police said. On Sept. 20, a person was taken into custody in connection with the murder.
Police located the suspect at a park at 14th and Girard Wednesday night and brought him in for questioning.
Police believe the suspect was a stranger to Martinez. Authorities have labeled the murder both unexplained and brutal.
Surveillance video from the restaurant, which we are not showing due to its graphic nature, shows the woman coming inside the restaurant covered in blood. The brief video showed a man walking down a street, swinging his arm.
"It is more likely a random act than anything else, but we're going to look at all possibilities", Police Chief Peter Newsham said during a Wednesday news conference, adding patrons at the restaurant "did the best they could" to save Martinez's life. Horrifically, a bleeding Martinez ran to a nearby business after being stabbed but was unable to be saved. She stumbled into a nearby restaurant to call for help, where the manager dialled emergency services and customers attempted to assist her.
Residents in the Logan Circle neighborhood say they don't feel any safer with Ms. Martinez's suspected attacker off the streets.
At approximately 7:56 pm, members of the Third District responded to the listed location for the report of a stabbing.
The decedent has been identified as 35 year-old Wendy Karina Martinez, of Northwest, DC.
Prior to the arrest, MPD had offered up to $25,000 to anyone with information that could help find the suspect, who was captured on video.
DC police announced an update in the case would be provided at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. "To have something like that happening, it's unsettling", Newsham said.
"This is a very isolated instance", he said. "It's a very unlikely thing that occurred at this intersection, but at the same time, I'm sure that doesn't bring any level of comfort to the Martinez family".
She had just got engaged on Wednesday.
"Wendy's murder has been devastating to her family and friends, people in this neighborhood and certainty damaging to all of our senses of safety", Bowser said. "Wendy Katrina Martinez was the light of our lives". "Not only was she an avid runner, but she was a devout Christian, a wonderful friend, and a driven professional", it read. Family say the couple had begun making plans for their upcoming wedding.
