But Trump also might be able to appoint a temporary replacement for Rosenstein on an "acting" basis for up to 210 days, Vladeck writes - that person would need to have previously passed Senate confirmation for another post or be a senior official from a relevant department. The development comes three days after news reports indicating that past year Rosenstein had raised the idea of secretly recording Trump and of invoking the Constitution to have his Cabinet remove him from office.
He reportedly became alarmed after Trump cited a memo written by Rosenstein to fire Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.
Trump told Geraldo Rivera in an interview aired Monday that he's looking at what, if anything, to do about Rosenstein's reported actions. The president described the search as "an attack on our country".

Rosenstein has been the target of Trump's public ire and private threats for months, but uncertainty about his future deepened, following the revelation Friday that memos written by former Federal Bureau of Investigation deputy director Andrew McCabe said that in May 2017, Rosenstein suggested secretly recording the president and trying to muster support for invoking the 25th amendment to replace Trump.
Top administration officials responded to that op-ed and the revelations around Mr. Rosenstein in much the same way: telling anyone who believes the president is unfit for office to find a new job.
