The prosecution had hoped for a five to 10-year jail sentence for the attack at his suburban Philadelphia home while the defense asked for house arrest.
The jury - made up of seven men and five women - deliberated for 14 hours in April following the two-week retrial at Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, Pennsylvania.
He declined to testify in court or produce any witnesses to emphasize past years of philanthropic work as mitigating circumstances in his favor.
According to the state sentencing guidelines for similar offenses, Cosby could have conceivably gotten anywhere between 22 and 36 months in prison (plus or minus 12 months).
Under that designation, Cosby will have to undergo monthly counselling and register as a sex offender with police for the rest of his life.
The sentencing came as another extraordinary #MeToo drama unfolded on Capitol Hill, where Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh stands accused of sexual misconduct more than three decades ago. The judge also blasted Cosby's karma, saying, "This was a serious crime".
But Cosby's camp remained defiant, lashing out at the district attorney and denying that the star was given the right to a fair trial. Mr. Cosby heard me.
As the allegations mounted, his career all but collapsed, "Cosby Show" reruns were taken off the air, and one college after another stripped him of his honorary degrees. While Gloria Allred, who represented many of Cosby's accusers, addressed those waiting.
Constand says she now lives alone with her two dogs, "stuck in a holding pattern" as a middle-aged woman because she has trouble trusting people.
In a victim impact statement read in court, Constand described the harrowing toll that Cosby's assault took, essentially ruining her chances of ever having a normal life.
The judge is expected to sentence Cosby later Tuesday.
With that statement, it's obvious the strategy from Cosby's defense team is that if he can't have sex anymore, then he can't possibly be a threat to anymore women and therefore should not be sentenced to hard time in prison. He remained seated in the courtroom, chatting quietly with his lawyers and two friends during a recess while Montgomery County Judge Steven T. O'Neill considers the issue of bail.
"I wanted 30 years, but I'm very happy to know Mr. Cosby will do time in prison", said Chelan Lasha, who gave tearful testimony in court about the time she says Cosby drugged and groped her in the 1980s.
