Any trade at this point looks like the best angle for Minnesota, considering Butler's stance on the preseason and the belief that owner Glen Taylor's stance hasn't changed: Butler must be traded.
"Minnesota and Miami had been discussing deals that included a third team to take on salary, as well as doing a direct trade between only the Timberwolves and Heat, league sources said". It would have sent the Timberwolves' disgruntled star to Miami as part of a trade package, according to Woj.
Talks could pick up again in the future.
In July, Butler reportedly turned down Minnesota's four-year extension offer worth $110 million.
He is entering the fourth season of a five-year, $92.3 million contract he signed with Chicago in 2015, but he can enter the free agent market next summer by opting out of the final year.
As Miami Heat was receiving the amended version of their agreement, Minnesota was busy scrounging up Jimmy Butler's medical records.
Butler has been away from the team since being given permission to skip media day and has been rehabbing from offseason surgery on his right hand. The report also said the Rockets have been aggressive in trying to acquire Butler while Yahoo reported the Clippers have interest in trading for Butler.
But they recoiled once Minnesota asked for something more, putting any deal back to square one. As the Wolves traveled out West last week, Butler has been working out at the team's facility and has been in regular contact with teammates.
