Lady Gaga, who co-founded the Born This Way youth advocacy group, and Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general at the World Health Organization, co-authored the piece and shared some shocking statistics to bring attention to the importance of mental health.
This begs the question: is enough being done to help young South Africans battling with mental health issues?
Despite the millions of people who are affected by mental health issues, many of those suffering don't speak up because of the stigma that still exists.

"A child can suffer enormous stress due to small reasons like getting scolded or bullied in school, disputes between parents and even day-to-day pressure like forcing for a haircut", said Dr Arjun Raj Kunwar, child and adolescent psychiatrist at Kanti Children's Hospital.
It urged African leaders to develop and strengthen evidence-based programmes for young people, with the support of national policymakers and programme managers.
The Health Secretary then insisted: "In the last few years, mental health budgets have gone up".
"With mental and behavioral health, the lack of services means the future cost implications are even higher because people aren't even getting treatment", Bass said.
Corrigan said another reason why mental illness can be so costly is because it often affects younger people in their prime working years. "But factors such as financial problems, stress, substance abuse and exam stress can also be factors".
He said the government is looking at a range of issues in society that could be leading people to kill themselves.
The governor explained that people with mental health problems deserve love, care, understanding and support.
"Instead of treating those facing mental health conditions with the compassion we would offer to someone with a physical injury or illness, we ostracize, blame and condemn", the essay continued, adding that funding to help mental illness around the world is terribly low.
