"I don't think I played a match where I didn't get broken, so that's something a bit more unusual for me".
The 21-year-old, now ranked 19th, will enter the top 15 of the ATP rankings for the first time after he competes against Novak Djokovic in Sunday's final. The 21-year-old made a strong start at the Qi Zhong stadium as he broke in the opening game against Federer, the top seed, and lost only five points on serve to clinch the first set in 34 minutes.
"Maybe I was Chinese in the past life", said Djokovic, smiling, in explaining impressive record in the country. "I'm sure that it hasn't happened too many times if it did".
The win means that Djokovic will return to No.2 in the ATP world rankings when they are published later this month, with the possibility of reclaiming his No.1 sport now in sight.
There was no let-up, though, and a sublime volley had Djokovic cupping an ear to the crowd as Coric failed to break back, the contest finally settled as the 14-time grand slam victor served out the championship.
"Today, really, I just came on the court with absolutely no pressure", Ćorić said.
"And please stop asking me, I really don't know".
Earlier in the day, three-times Shanghai champion Novak Djokovic extended his winning streak to 16 matches after beating South African Kevin Anderson 7-6 (1) 6-3, edging the Serb closer to the world number two ranking.
And even though Federer provided some early resistance in Coric's match-winning service, the 20-time grand-slam champion could not find a breakthrough to survive. Djokovic won the final game to love when Coric sailed a backhand long.
He had his first sniff of an opportunity with a break point in the sixth game of the second set, but second seed Djokovic survived when Coric again fired wide.
But the Croatian couldn't prevent Djokovic from snatching the title on a fourth match point in the next game.
