Gamesindustry.biz quotes Rob Kostich, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Call of Duty at Activision, as saying: "Black Ops 4 is an incredible game, and the community's response to it has been wonderful".
Not only is the game Activision's biggest digital launch ever, beating Destiny 2, but it's also the fastest-selling digital game in PlayStation (but not Xbox) history.
Activision loves the idea of pushing digital sales for many reasons, especially on PC where the game is exclusive to its fully-owned Battle.net storefront. "The brand-new Supply Stream system now grants you new gear as you progress through tiers", Activision stated in the blog (via CharlieIntel). Digital sales of the Treyarch-developed shooter surpassed the previous digital day one sales record-holder, 2017's Call of Duty: WWII. While these look amusing and add a layer of personality to the match, it seems it also allows inadvertent cheating in Black Ops 4's Blackout battle royale.
Announced by Activision, that means it beat the record for the franchise that last year's entry set, and it was the greatest day one digital sales on all platforms, PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
As a point of comparison, the other major release last week was WWE 2K19, which saw physical sales drop only 37.5% - a much smaller figure than Call Of Duty. They specifically say that those modes include Blackout, which also seems to be where most of the community's concern has been focused. "This is just the beginning, it's going to be an incredible journey with Black Ops IIII".
If you love Call of Duty there's no reason not to pick it up - and let's be honest, you probably already have - while those who love Battle Royale games will struggle to find a better one.
