President Trump did what he does best when he appeared at a rally in Lebanon, Ohio. But in introducing Grant, Trump heaped praise upon another Civil War general from the Confederacy: Lee.
But NBC News omitted Trump's earlier statement that "Ohio is the state that gave us a great president", which would have clarified that Trump was saying that it was the state of OH that "gave you a general, who was incredible". Grant was not viewed as a great general but he ended up beating Lee anyway. Grant, who went on to become the 18th president of the United States, was a native of OH and this marked Trump's attempt to make note of the great Ohioans who hail from the Buckeye State. SPLC wrote, "President Trump's praise of Robert E. Lee is the kind of revisionist history that has kept Jim Crow alive in the South for more than 150 years. You know who I'm talking about, right?" he said.
News on Friday incorrectly tweeted that Trump had called Lee "incredible" during his speech.
"Lincoln had nearly developed a phobia because he was having a hard time with a true great fighter and a great general, Robert E. Lee", Trump said just moments later. Trump said that it wasn't until Lincoln made Ulysees S Grant his general that the Union was able to bring down the Confederate army. He said his statements about Lee were part of a monologue in which he applauded Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant-an OH native.
It wasn't until Sunday afternoon that NBC issued a corrected tweet with Trump's full remarks, admitting the president never called Lee "incredible".
"So Robert E. Lee was a great general".
"Trump praises Robert E. Lee during OH rally", an article on Politico said.
Other news outlets also described the president's comments as "praising" Lee. He's got a drinking problem.' And Lincoln said, 'I don't care what problem he has, you guys aren't winning.' And his name was Grant. They said that the "attached video clip lacked the full context for Trump's remark". The original, incorrect tweet was left intact. Calls to remove statues honoring confederate figures inspired the deadly 2017 in Charlottesville.
See Trump's comments in the video below. Trump noted that Grant was criticized for his alcoholism, but Lincoln realized he still had the skill set necessary to counteract the effectiveness of Lee, who was a formidable opponent and had proven himself to be an excellent military strategist.
