Israeli warplanes have carried out a series of airstrikes on the besieged Gaza Strip.
Last week, a rocket from Gaza hit a home in the southern Israeli city of Beer Sheva, prompting Israel to carry out airstrikes against almost two dozen Hamas targets in Gaza. It has said its fighter jets struck dozens of targets across Gaza and accused Iranian forces in Damascus of orchestrating the barrages.
Protesters are demanding the right of return to their homes and villages in historical Palestine from which they were driven in 1948 to make way for the new state of Israel.
The coastal strip has been under a crippling siege since 2007 and witnessed three wars since 2008.
Meanwhile, clashes also broke out between Palestinian and Israeli army forces near Ramallah, in the West Bank, with early reports suggesting at least 9 Palestinians were wounded by Israeli live fire.
"We hold Hamas responsible for everything coming from Gaza", he said.
Islamic Jihad, a smaller militant group, implicitly claimed responsibility for the rocket fire.
"At least 14 rockets were fired from Gaza at Israeli civilians", military spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said on Twitter.
The overnight fighting Saturday is the heaviest exchange of fire between the bitter enemies in several weeks.
The latest Israeli violence come after five Palestinians were killed and 170 others wounded by Israeli troops during demonstrations on Friday along the Gaza-Israel buffer zone, according to Gaza's health ministry.
Egyptian mediators have been trying to prevent a full-blown conflict between Hamas and Israel for months.
In response, the IDF struck eight military targets in three Hamas compounds in Gaza, including a training facility, munitions manufacturing sites, and a storage site.
The Hamas-led weekly protests along the Israeli border have been aimed in large part at breaking the blockade, which has devastated the Gaza economy. It says it is defending its border and accuses Hamas of exploiting young protesters and encouraging them to risk their lives in order to increase pressure to ease the blockade.
Hundreds of Palestinians had converged along the zone as part of ongoing demonstrations against Israel's decades-long occupation. He also criticized Hamas for escalating the border protests after Israel had tried to defuse tensions by allowing special fuel shipments into Gaza to improve the supply of electricity.
The Israeli-Palestinian relations have always been tense over their territorial conflict, with Palestine seeking diplomatic recognition for their independent state on the territories of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
A Hamas official said late Friday Egypt was again seeking to negotiate a return to calm.
Dozens were also injured by tear gas fired by Israeli forces towards the demonstrators participating in the protests, which were held for the 31st week in a row.
One day earlier, a rocket from Gaza landed in southern Israel.
