CNN journalist Abby Phillip asks President Donald Trump a question as he speaks with reporters before departing for France on the South Lawn of the White House, Nov. 9, 2018.
The Senate's top Republican expressed confidence Friday that the Russian Federation investigation will be allowed to run its course, saying President Donald Trump has never signaled to him that special counsel Robert Mueller could be fired.
They also sent a letter telling the Justice Department to preserve "all materials related to any investigations by the special counsel's office" and the "departure of Attorney General Sessions". That contradicted Trump's remarks on Fox News last month, when he called Whitaker "a great guy" and said "I mean, I know Matt Whitaker". What? Because he has an impression what the Mueller investigation should look like is different from what Senate and House Democrats believe? "Anything that is outside of Russian coordination or the 2016 campaign would be outside of the scope of that investigation". "He's the acting attorney general".
The change of leadership at the DOJ came one day after Democrats won control of the House of Representatives, meaning Trump will face more oversight than he has under the Republican-controlled Congress.
"I think it seems wildly inappropriate to most of us that the president would appoint someone who has such a strong opinion on an investigation on him", said Mindie Riley, a Bethlehem resident who helped organize the rally. "It's a perilous time". His spokesman said on Thursday that McConnell has no further comment on the legislation.
In a statement Thursday, the Republican said Whitaker is a "steady hand that will provide good leadership and judgment, and will ensure that the United States Department of Justice upholds the highest standards of the rule of law".
"I'd like them to protect the Mueller investigation".
"Whitaker has to recuse himself under DOJ's regulation requiring recusal if you have a personal or political relationship with someone substantially involved in conduct that is the subject of the investigation or prosecution", Shaub told Reuters. Joni Ernst (R-IA).
When posting the joint letter on Twitter, Maura Healey, Attorney General of MA, said that Whitaker's "hostility to the Special Councel's investigation disqualifies him from overseeing Robort Muller". He added that Whitaker was a "sounding board" for him when Clovis worked for Trump's campaign.
The move took place shortly after a press conference Trump gave at the White House during which he said Sessions' fate was under consideration.
He also said the line of succession within the Justice Department does not include the chief of staff and the fact that someone in that position would be made acting attorney general is "very odd".
