German Chancellor Angela Merkel opened the Paris Peace Forum, which followed a ceremony in the French capital to mark the centenary of the end of World War One, with a warning that "blinkered" nationalism was gaining ground in Europe and beyond. But in those remarks, Macron did not intend to propose a "European army" as a replacement for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation - let alone, to suggest that the E.U. should regard the United States as a geopolitical threat.
Gerard Araud, France's ambassador to the USA, challenged Trump, tweeting, "For the sake of truth, Pres.EmmanuelMacron didn't say that European Union needed an army "against the US".
Macron had also said Europe needs to protect itself against cyberthreats from China, Russia and the US. That request, according to Putin himself, was that he not meet with the president one-on-one during the World War I commemorative event in Paris.
"They were starting to learn German in Paris before the US came along", Trump quipped.
In a speech at the first world war commemoration, Macron delivered a forceful rebuke against rising nationalism, calling it a "betrayal of patriotism" and warning against "old demons coming back to wreak chaos and death".
"It's been a wonderful two days we spent in France, and this has certainly been the highlight of the trip", Trump said in remarks that capped a weekend in Paris where he and more than 80 other world leaders marked the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I ...
Trump continued attacking Macron and France on Twitter saying "there is no country more Nationalist than France, very proud people-and rightfully so!" and adding: "Make France great again!"
The president, who spent the weekend in Paris with Macron, also blasted what he claims are heavy tariffs put on U.S. imports to France, including wine.
"President Trump did not want to cause that kind of unexpected disruption to the city and its people", she said.
France does charge higher tariffs on US wines, but the monetary difference is relatively small, with five- to 14-cent tariffs on bottles of French wine imported into the USA versus 11 to 29 cents on USA exported wines headed to France. But, at the same time, he developed a strong relationship with Trump at a time when many European leaders are keeping a distance. "Not fair, must change!"
Many others on social media also took aim at Mr Trump pointing out his predecessor, Barack Obama, and Candian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, had previously dealt with the rain at past ceremonies.
In front of almost 70 heads of state, he said that nationalism is a "betrayal of patriotism".
But the explanation didn't cut it for some of Trump's critics who took to Twitter to sound off over the weekend.
Trump tweeted about a suggestion by French President Emmanuel Macron that Europe build up its militaries because the continent can no longer depend on the United States for defence.
"Speech next day at American Cemetary in pouring rain!" All 28 national customs services act in unison, applying common tariffs to all goods entering their borders that then move unhindered throughout the EU. Alcoholic content is also factored into US tariffs, along with the size of the wine's container.
