In North Carolina, 166 hate crimes were reported previous year, up 12 percent from the 148 reported in 2016.
Almost 20 percent of the reported hate crimes were attributed to religious-based motivation slightly over 15 percent were reported as motivated by the victim's sexual orientation.
"The report covers the first year of President Donald Trump's time in the White House", writes Vox's German Lopez, "and he's been repeatedly criticized, from his campaign to his presidential statements and tweets, of stoking racist sentiment, particularly against immigrants and refugees".
The data comes from a new Federal Bureau of Investigation report that reveals over 7,000 hate crimes with over 8,000 victims were reported to law enforcement in 2017.
According to the report, 59.6% of incidents were motivated by bias against race, ethnicity or ancestry. Maybe the government just did a better job of counting them.
The total tally included a doubling of anti-Arab hate crimes and a large swell of anti-Semitic incidents. That's a difference of about 1,000.
Hate crime incidents targeting Jews and Jewish institutions in the USA spiked about 37 percent between 2016 and 2017, according to data released Tuesday by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Additionally, 938 acts targeted Jewish Americans.
Roughly 20 percent of victims were targeted because of their religion while about 15 percent were victimised based on their sexual-orientation.
Religion was the second biggest motivator of hate crimes, with 1,679 incidents reported by law enforcement agencies.
"That begins with leaders from all walks of life and from all sectors of society forcefully condemning anti-Semitism, bigotry, and hate whenever it occurs".
In a statement released Tuesday, acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker said the report "is a call to action - and we will heed that call". The report, released Tuesday, shows there was a almost 23% increase in religion-based hate crimes, including a 37% spike in anti-Jewish hate crimes.
Days before that attack, a gunman in Louisville, Kentucky killed two elderly African Americans at a grocery store in what officials are investigating as a hate crime. Anti-Arab hate crimes, though accounting for a fraction of all race-based hate crimes, doubled to 102 incidents.
"The American people can be assured that this department has already taken significant and aggressive actions against these crimes and that we will vigorously and effectively defend their rights", the statement said. There were 31 anti-Semitic hate crimes reported in the first 28 days of October in the city, compared to 9 for the same period in 2017, a New York Police Department spokesman said.
Nationally, anti-Jewish hate crimes made up more than half, 58.1 percent, of the 1,679 hate crimes targeting religion. The FBI was tasked with developing procedures for implementing, collecting, and managing hate-crime data.
