He's now expected to face a Parramatta court on Thursday.
Dawson instructed his solicitors to apply for bail, however his request was refused.
Lyn Dawson was last seen in Sydney's northern beaches in January 1982.
Just before 8am on Wednesday, Mr Dawson was arrested by Queensland Police detectives in the presence of Strike Force Scriven investigators.
This morning Dawson was arrested at the home of his twin brother on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
"Earlier this week, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions provided advice to police, and following further inquiries, detectives applied for an arrest warrant before travelling to Queensland", NSW Police said in a statement on Wednesday morning.
"We spoke to the family of Lynette Dawson this morning, who were certainly relieved to hear this result and from their perspective, they have asked for some patience in terms of their confidentiality in going forward", he said.
Fuller said in a press conference that New South Wales' unsolved homicide squad began re-investigating Lynette Dawson's disappearance since 2015, but new interviews from the podcast "helped [them] tie pieces of the puzzles together".
"No doubt it will be a voluminous brief with an enormous amount of evidence and obviously there will be a number of witnesses that will be called".
Despite two coronial inquests recommending Chris be prosecuted for murder, the DPP stated at the time there was insufficient evidence to lay charges.
The case came to prominence this year following The Australian's investigative podcast series, The Teacher's Pet.

He thanked the public and the media for the "partnership" in investigating the case.
He also described the police case as "circumstantial", as no body had been found.
Mr Dawson has denied killing Mrs Dawson, with whom he has two children.
Greg Simms said he was on the veranda of his Lake Macquarie home when NSW police informed them of today's explosive development.
"Without a body, without knowing first of all whether in fact she is dead, without knowing secondly if she is dead, how she died, it's very hard to mount a case of a reasonable prospect of conviction just on motive and the undefined existence of means and opportunity".
A forensic search of the home the Dawsons once shared in Bayview was undertaken.
After a career playing rugby league for the Newtown Jets, Chris Dawson worked as a P.E. teacher at Cromer High School.
