While that report suggested Meyer would coach the 2019 season before stepping down, that won't be the case as Ohio State confirmed Tuesday morning that the 54-year-old Meyer will retire from coaching following the Buckeyes' appearance in this season's Rose Bowl game New Year's Day.
Since taking over Ohio State, Meyer has gone 82-9 (54-4) with a national championship in 2014, an undefeated season in 2012 and three more conference titles.
When asked if he would ever coach again, Meyer initially told reporters that was a "complicated question".
The school, which was already embroiled in separate scandals involving alleged sex abuse by a now-deceased athletics doctor and a diving coach, put Meyer on leave August 1.
Ohio State had just hung 62 points on MI and Urban Meyer remained ideal against his program's most bitter rival, so you wouldn't expect the reality of his situation to hit him as he was swimming through fans on the Ohio Stadium turf.
The timing of Day's emergence helped Meyer feel he could walk away at this time. Legacy is determined by the lasting impact one has on the culture of a program. "It has always been the goal to see a strong and healthy program handed to an elite coach and person to make it even better". He also says knowing assistant coach Ryan Day would be his successor made the decision easier.
But perhaps most important to Ohio State fans, Meyer is a flawless 7-0 against rival MI. "Not only has he elevated the status and quality of our program, his presence elevated Big Ten football".
Lesmerises asked if he was fairly certain, "I am certain yes, Meyer said". He was also the first to post three 13-win seasons in a four-year span and win two BCS titles. He agreed to become the next Buckeyes coach in November of 2011. He wouldn't be going back to Bowling Green or a program like Utah when he took that job in 2003 and the National Football League doesn't appear to be an interest.
Meyer, who had a "core values" banner in the locker room demanding his players treat women with respect, apologized to Ohio State fans following word that he would be suspended.
Believe it or not, you can bet on whether Meyer will be the next Browns coach. With Meyer's retirement, the most efficient active coach will be the guy coaching against Meyer in his final game. "You can now sit in a box and yell at us for not going for it or going for it on fourth down".
Miami - For the same reasons Meyer would make a lot of sense at Florida State because of the recruiting benefits and path to the playoff, Miami could be a ideal post-retirement home. No. 1 - win the rivalry game (with Michigan). "I recognize the toll that it takes", Smith said. The university cited that lapse in suspending Meyer for three games after an investigation.
Meyer had a wildly successful run in Columbus, which he looks to culminate with a Rose Bowl victory.
It will be his first time coaching in the Rose Bowl. "It is going to be an honor to represent the Big Ten conference in that game".
