Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa carries the ball against The Citadel Nov. 17 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Oklahoma's Kyler Murray won the Davey O'Brien Award for the nation's top quarterback Thursday night at the Home Depot College Football Awards.
Tagovailoa received the Maxwell Award for player of the year while Murray was named the nation's top quarterback with the Davey O'Brien Award at the College Football Awards show in Atlanta. They are both finalists for the Heisman, along with Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins. He joins Henry (2015) and McCarron (2013) as the only Crimson Tide players to win the Maxwell Award.
Murray and Tagovailoa will then face each other in the College Football Playoff, when No. 1 Alabama plays No. 4 Oklahoma at the Orange Bowl semifinal on December 29.
Murray and Tua will also meet at the end of the month in the College Football Playoff.
Murray and Tagovailoa will now head to New York City as Heisman trophy finalists, with the victor more uncertain than usual.
The Walter Camp victor has won the Heisman the last five seasons. No other school has had more than two players win AP Player of the Year.
The Allen, Texas, product has completed 241 of 340 passes this year for 4,053 yards and 40 touchdowns to seven interceptions. Tagovailoa also broke Alabama's single-game touchdown records with six (five passing, one rushing) during Alabama's 52-21 victory over Auburn. The last Maxwell/Davey O'Brien split among quarterbacks came in 2016 when Lamar Jackson won the Maxwell Award and Deshaun Watson won the Davey O'Brien Award.
Murray leads the country in total offense (4,945 yards), points responsible for (306) and passing efficiency (205.7).
After a record-setting season, Murray is set to take home a list of awards, starting with this one. "All the hard work with my teammates has really paid off".
