The rating was pulled down in the Safety Assist category, as the 2019 Jeep Wrangler lacks automatic emergency braking and lane assistance. "It is high time we saw a product from the FIAT-Chrysler group offering safety to rival its competitors", says Michiel van Ratingen.
The new-generation Jeep Wrangler will also make its way to India sometime next year.
Perhaps most concerning about the zero-star rating was the Fiat Panda's Child Occupant Protection scored just 16 per cent. Euro NCAP testing puts a lot more weight on driver assistance systems in its testing, an area where the new Wrangler is somewhat lacking.
Jeep has defended the result, claiming the Wrangler "meets or exceeds federal safety requirements in every market in which it is sold" and that its focus on off-road performance means it does not align with "testing protocols that apply exclusively to urban scenarios".
Australian versions of the Wrangler will be available with more active driver aids than the vehicle tested in Europe, including AEB, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic detection, a reverse camera and parking sensors. The deformation of the footwell indicated that it had reached the limit of its integrity.
The scores of the vehicles that underwent the stringent safety test procedures are keenly observed not just by the manufacturers but the prospective customers as well due to the paramount significance they have on modern day vehicles. The SUV has been expertly engineered with a lightweight aluminium body structure and integrated battery pack to provide outstanding crash protection for occupants.
