Second Dinner, a startup game studio built by ex-Hearthstone developers including game director Ben Brode, announced today that its first project is a collaboration with the home of Captain America, Spider-Man, and like 50 other Spider-Men.
As revealed via a new video and blog post on Second Dinner's website, Brode and the rest of the team announced that they're now creating a project associated with Marvel. The company announced today that it has received a $30 million investment from a Chinese company, NetEase, to fund a new project set in the Marvel universe. And now, working with the Marvel Games team and playing in the Marvel Universe.
The new game has been in early development - meaning prototypes and playtests - for about six months. However, the developer notes that there's "a huge opportunity to make deep, satisfying games that are optimized for mobile".
Given NetEase's involvement, we can expect this game to include strong ties to microtransactions.
KitGuru Says: Right now, I'm picturing a Marvel version of Hearthstone, but I could be wrong.
"I've worked with Hamilton and Ben for years, and they are exactly who we want making Marvel games", said Jay Ong, EVP and head of Marvel Games at Marvel Entertainment, in a canned statement. "Or maybe Spectacular! Or Incredible.or Mighty...or quite possibly all of the above!"
The company is looking for a client engineer and technical artist. Details about it are yet unclear, but the crew promises that applicants who get hired into Second Dinner will naturally get to see it. "They'll help us support separate teams inside Bungie to bring our newest ambitions to life".
He added: "They and the team they've assembled at Second Dinner have made some of the greatest games in history".
