This past season, Chicago owned the top defense in points allowed and against the run while ranking third in total yards allowed and seventh against the pass. Fangio was interviewed for the Bears' head coaching job in January of 2018, but that job went to Matt Nagy. The 58-year-old Scranton, PA native coached the Tennessee Titans for three seasons from 2011 to 2013, amassing a 22-26 mark and never reaching the playoffs. The decision, on the surface, may seem perplexing. The Broncos fired Joseph on December 31 after his second season as head coach. Both Von Miller and Bradley Chubb form a 1-2 tandem that Fangio can utilize to help the Broncos build toward respectability again, although the team will need significant help on offense, both among personnel and coaching staff.
After serving as the Defensive Coordinator for the Chicago Bears, a team that finished with the best defense in the league, Vic Fangio is moving on as he has been named the next head coach of the Denver Broncos.
Gary Kubiak will have a new role in 2019.
"I pay attention to the schemes that these guys run". "If he wants to be a head coach one day, I want him to take a job and be a head coach". Though his specialty is defense, talking to him reveals a coach who understands all facets of the game.
Much as former Denver defensive coordinator Wade Phillips used to draw praise from players less than half his age, Fangio was greatly respected in the Bears' locker room. Multiple coaches on staff could be retained, though the expectation remains there will be new offensive and defensive coordinators.
It's down to two for the Denver Broncos. It's why, after Elway sifted through the injuries of the past season, including seven players who had started multiple games on offense who ended the season on injured reserve, the trades of Demaryius Thomas and Aqib Talib, and the close losses in eight games against teams that made this year's playoffs, he still fired Joseph.
