Tom Thibodeau is no longer the coach of the Timberwolves.
New Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Ryan Saunders met with every player on the team individually on Monday after he was named the new man in charge of the club, according to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic. While the timing was a bit off, the Thibodeau ouster is already around the corner for some time now, given his internal conflicts with the organization.
Thibodeau took over in Minnesota in April 2016.
"I'm excited to see what he'll do, because he's a very enthusiastic coach and he's a very good communicator", said general manager Scott Layden, who was hired by Thibodeau, also the president of basketball operations, and faces an uncertain future with the club.
Thibodeau was also the head coach of the Bulls from 2011-15, where he compiled a 255-139 record.
Ultimately Butler was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for forwards Robert Covington and Dario Saric, and only after Taylor stepped in. And everyone involved - players, coaches and staff - know that.
The same can be said for Derrick Rose, who flourished in Chicago under Thibodeau and had his career waylaid by a bad knee until his former coach forged a reunion previous year in Minnesota.
Hoiberg has been mentioned as a candidate for UCLA's head coaching vacancy. These instances reduced Minnesota's leverage in negotiating a deal. The lucrative contract that they gave Andrew Wiggins a couple of years ago is looking egregious right now, so we could expect a Wiggins trade if any teams should engage any interest. Though the Timberwolves ended their 13-year absence from the playoffs last spring, they've by and large underachieved since Thibodeau, who is 60, took over. Minnesota hoops fans should close their eyes soon as a possible course-changing rebuild could put the Wolves' current season down the drain.
