"The gamer-friendly, versatile design [of the new VR controllers] is useful in all sorts of VR content", HTC states.
HTC VIVE attempts to redefine the VR experience with new hardware, software and content offerings for its VR portfolio. Eye-tracking is a big deal for VR. The Vive Pro Eye left us feeling it's geared towards business and commercial use, not gamers. The Vive Pro Eye is similar to the Vive Pro announced at CES 2018 but has built-in eye tracking for new interaction abilities.
Jamie Leece, senior vice president, Games & VR, Major League Baseball says: "We've invested in VR technology to bring fans a fun immersive experience and connection to our game and deliver a new level of engagement through VR game competitions, at-home play and in-ballpark attractions". This is a "Pro" version of its HTC Vive VR headset and as you might have assumed, it comes packed with eye tracking. Launching on April 5, VivePort Infinity will allow users to sign up and gain instant access to more than 500 titles in the store. Members will be able access Viveport Infinity across all current and future Vive devices as well as the Oculus Rift and other devices in the Wave Eco-system.
The Vive Cosmos is designed with comfort, and ease of set-up and use, without the need to mount and calibrate external sensors, Daniel O'Brien, general manager of HTC Vive Americas, said at a press conference. For specifics, keep an eye on the HTC website and HTC Twitter account as the company plans to make the headset available sometime in the second quarter of 2019.
If this already has you sold on the headset, it's worth noting that even though no price point was announced, it'll likely be more expensive than the established Vive Pro headset at $799.
The HTC Vive Cosmos will be the first device to operate on the Vive Reality platform. As part of the project, Vive announced a deal with Mozilla to launch the first Vive-dedicated VR browser.
What makes the HTC Vive Cosmo special though is the use of cameras on the outside which means there's no need for additional lighthouses or tracking equipment to be kept around the area of use.
