And speaking of missions, the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) reports that hundreds of people, including women and children, were apparently killed during clashes between Batende and Banunu communities in Yumbi Territory, in the north-west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
A MONUSCO special mission looking into the circumstances of the fighting found at least 11 mass graves and 43 individual graves around the town of Yumbi and at least four communal graves containing at least 170 bodies in nearby Bongende, spokeswoman Florence Marchal said.
During the epidemic in West Africa, the first case was registered in December 2013 in Guinea, and since then the disease has extended to neighbouring Liberia and Sierra Leone, as well as to other states, including outside the region.
The Ministry of Health, WHO and partners have continued to face challenges in the containment and control of the Ebola Virus disease (EVD) outbreak in DR Congo.
According to health ministry, Ebola virus disease transmission in DRC continues in North Kivu and Ituri provinces, adding that Butembo and Katwa are the current hot spots and represent 65 percent of new confirmed cases in the past 21 days. Over a thousand people have been massacred in the area since 2014 by armed fighters and more than 230 past year, according to US-based rights watchdog, Human Rights Watch.
Voting in affected areas was postponed while the Electoral Commission building was among facilities destroyed. The mission said it was ready to support the Congolese authorities to "bring justice to the victims, and promote reconciliation between the two communities".
