This technique means that 3D object recognition is improved thanks to response times being super fast. It's worth noting that this time-of-flight camera is only used at the front of the device, and the megapixels of both front and rear cameras is yet to be announced. This uses 3D tech to calculate accurate measurements of the subject and his or her distance from the phone.
Compared to structured lighting system for 3D facial recognition on Apple iPhones, a ToF sensor is cheaper and easier to manufacture.
Touching on the LG G8 ThinQ itself, the device will be their first flagship for 2019 which will go head on with the Samsung Galaxy S10.
According to Andreas Urschitz, president at Infineons Power Management & Multimarket division, 3D cameras will be found in most smartphones within the next five years and the German company will contribute a significant share. Due to this speed this technology is often used for face recognition and other biometric authentication techniques.
