At a pre-Grammy brunch honoring Janelle Monae, a few hundred music industry players and performers packed tightly in a room to hear the singer speak passionately about women being the backbone of the music industry and dominating in nominations at Sunday's show.
Monae also highlighted the huge year for women at the Grammys: Five of the eight album of the year nominees are women, and six of the eight best new artist contenders are female acts.
The three-and-a-half hour extravaganza will feature performances from nominees Chloe X Halle, Grammy-winner Lady Gaga (choosing this over the Bafta film awards), fellow victor Mark Ronson and Grammy nominee Travis Scott fresh off his performance at Super Bowl LIII.
Brandi Carlile and Kacey Musgraves swept the boards in their respective genre categories, Americana and Country, making the ones to beat in the night's main category - album of the year.
LIVE from the GRAMMYs red carpet in Los Angeles, host Tracy Moore chats with the night's biggest artists and nominees while music correspondent Devo Brown and fashion correspondent Lauren Howe break down the night's hottest tracks and looks.
Live red carpet coverage is set to kick off at 5 p.m. EST, and will stream on the Grammy Awards website.
It all began when Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich told The Associated Press in an article published Thursday that by the time Grande and those running the show reached the point where a performance felt possible, she decided against it because she felt it was "too late for her to pull something together".
This year's nominees mark a departure from the 2018 Grammys, where Recording Academy CEO Neil Portnow was criticized when he said women need to "step up" when asked about the lack of women in the top categories. This year's award ceremony will be hosted by 15-time Grammy victor Alicia Keys and this will be her first time hosting the ceremony. "I have to say, this is a golden age of composing", Kernis said, shouting out his peers in his acceptance speech.
The lead-up to this year's Grammys has not been completely smooth, though. He later acknowledged that it was a "poor choice of words", and it forced the academy to launch a new task force focused on inclusion and diversity.
"It was when my creativity & self expression was stifled by you, that i decided not to attend. i hope the show is exactly what you want it to be and more", she continued. Taylor Swift, who was snubbed and one scored one nomination, also won't be at the show.
Hosted by 15-time Grammy victor Alicia Keys, this year's broadcast features performances by Lady Gaga, Shawn Mendes and rapper Cardi B. A representative for the Grammys didn't return an email seeking clarification about the tribute.
