Northam, 59, said he wants to spend the remaining three years of his term trying to ensure that black Virginians have the same opportunities as whites. Faifax instead called on "all appropriate and impartial investigatory authorities, including the FBI, to investigate fully and thoroughly the allegations against me". A California woman has accused Fairfax of sexually assaulting her 15 years ago, saying in a statement Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019, that she repressed the memory for years but came forward in part because of the possibility that Fairfax could succeed a scandal-mired governor. A lawyer for Meredith Watson, 39, said in a statement that Fairfax attacked Watson in 2000. "I want to stand here in that truth and restate that my truth, as well as the truth of Dr. Tyson and Ms. Watson, should be fully investigated and thoroughly assessed", Fairfax's statement said, also calling on the FBI to "investigate fully and thoroughly the allegations against me". In an interview that aired Monday on "CBS This Morning", Northam also referred to enslaved Africans as "indentured servants from Africa" before acknowledging that such a practice was slavery. "It feels like something bigger is going on here".
Northam said the Commonwealth has more work to do to address racial inequities.
Attorney Nancy Erika Smith released the statement Saturday night on behalf of Meredith Watson after Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax denied the allegation and called for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other authorities to investigate. In his first interview since the scandal erupted, he told The Washington Post on Saturday that the uproar has pushed him to confront the state's deep and lingering divisions, as well as his own insensitivity. "To be very clear, I did not want to engage in oral sex with Mr. Fairfax and I never gave any form of consent", Tyson said in the statement.
Northam has been in seclusion all week, using tunnels to shuttle between the mansion and the nearby building where he has an office. It will be very positive and you know we have a number of inequities in this country right now and in Virginia.
Ralph Northam places hand over his heart at a funeral for a state trooper Saturday in Chilhowie, Va., during one of his first public appearances since the blackface scandal broke. "I am asking that no one rush to judgment and I am asking for there to be space in this moment for due process".
Virginia's Democratic congressional delegation was split.
The disgrace tarnishing the top elected officials could sour voters on Democrats in an election year in which every General Assembly seat is up for grabs, likely helping Republicans hold on to a thin majority.
If Fairfax were to leave, it's unclear who could replace him as lieutenant governor. Steve Newman, the Senate's pro tem, serve as both a voting senator and temporary lieutenant governor.
