Newborn baby found lying on road with umbilical cord still attached

Aurelio Fuentes, who found the infant, said he heard her crying and screaming. It was lying on its back, covered in its own feces, which had leaked through its onesie, he said. Shortly after, another driver pulled up to asked Fuentes Jr. if he was OK.

Officers arrived minutes later to find the baby.

The woman invited Fuentes and the baby into her heated auto, where the two chose to unzip its soiled flannel onesie.

"It's very fortunate that the child was discovered by the newspaper delivery person before she was seriously injured or even possibly killed", Pogue said. That's when they discovered the umbilical cord still attached.

"The baby appeared to have been born during the night and is now being treated by the Valley Children's neonatal intensive care unit", said Pogue.

Serratto said preliminary drug screenings on the child were negative.

It's unclear how long the newborn had been left out in the road.

According to Madera County Undersheriff Tyson Pogue, a man was walking or jogging eastbound on Avenue 13 1/2 when he was approached by a Hispanic female in her early 20s driving a white, smaller SUV.

The unidentified man told the mother to take her child to the fire station or a nearby children's hospital - but the women just drove away.

Following a rise in newborn infants being abandoned in inappropriate locations, California introduced a Safe Surrendered Baby program in 2001, which was brought into law in 2006.

Drop-off points include designated fire stations and hospitals. Yahoo Lifestyle has reached out to the Madera County Sheriff's office for information on the baby and mother and will update this post when it responds.

A newborn baby just hours old was found abandoned on a California country road in frigid temperatures, according to authorities.
